The event, which was attended by all six rectors of Latvia’s universities, elected LU rector, Professor Mārcis Auziņš as chairman, and the rector of the Latvia University of Agriculture, Professor Juris Skujāns, as deputy chairman.
“Universities in Latvia and all over the world not only fulfil the functions of educational institutions at the highest level, they have, in addition, always been significant scientific centres in which active research work is carried out and new creative ideas arise. The main founding task of the Association of Latvian Universities is to prove to society, the state, and local government institutions the unique contribution universities make in the fields of education and science – a contribution which is often underrated. At the same time, our task is to offer our intellectual capacity to the work of developing the country’s economy,” stressed LU rector, Professor Mārcis Auziņš.
For his part, Arvīds Barševskis, the Rector of Daugavpils University, emphasised that “In the current crisis, many more resources should be concentrated in universities which have a developed science base. In this way, factories and industry will receive innovations and new technologies at a faster rate, thereby more rapidly developing new science-based businesses.”
The rector of Riga’s Stradiņa University, Professor Jānis Gardovskis said that “The foundation of the asssociation can be viewed as a historical event. This is the first time that all of Latvia’s universities have been able to agree on the founding of their association and together reconcile their various points of view.”
The main tasks of the association are to coordinate the work of the universities and work together to solve serious questions, thereby achieving the best results and raising the standard of education even higher. In addition, they aim to set up joint doctorate schools; to discuss joint projects; and to harmonise study programmes.
