On November 22nd, at the UL, UT Rector Alar Karis and VU Rector Benediktas Juodka met UL Rector Marcis Auzins and discussed topical issues of education and science in the Baltic States.
During the meeting Rectors discussed the ongoing co-operation in implementing a joint teachers’ training programme offering a joint degree, initially launching language and math teachers’ professional programmes. These as excellence programmes are to set higher admission requirements.
Future co-operation areas were also discussed, in particular strategic projects for the new EU planning period. In addition, possible directions in research excellence were examined to prevent their doubling at the Universities and to ensure the efficient use of recent large investments in scientific infrastructure. To elaborate on the issue, the University Vice- rectors are planning to meet in December, in Riga.
The Rectors acknowledged the urgency of establishing higher quality criteria for the Baltic Universities.
In conclusion, the Rectors discussed planning of the academic activities, labour relations in the Baltic States, as well as the EU project management problems.
The Rectors’ visit was organised within the framework of the UL, UT, VU declaration for the strategic partnership signed on April 21st, in Tartu, Estonia.
